TThe Rhythm Foundation presents a very special edition of monthly Dance Band Night September 8 at the North Beach Bandshell. Pianist Ivan “Melon” Lewis’ Cuban Swing Express makes their US debut – ten top Cuban jazz musicians, based now in Madrid, Spain, and a fresh interpretation of Latin big band jazz. The concert is free and open to the public, and even includes a pre-show dance lesson by Kings Dance Studio. Pianist and producer Ivan “Melon” Lewis is recognized as one of the most talented and influential pianists of his generation. A Latin Grammy nominee for ‘Best New Artist’ and ‘Latin Jazz Album’ for his 2015 album Hoy Y Ayer, Melon for years was the musical director for the incendiary diva Buika (he co-produced her album La Noche Mas Larga) and now tours extensively with his quartet and with his latest project and big band, the Cuban Swing Express.
The Cuban Swing Express is 10 of the best and most talented Cuban musicians living in Europe. They made their debut at L’Alhambra Theater in Paris in December 2014. The group combines a mix of traditional big band swing and classic Cuban rhythms in a bold and distinctive format – compositions from Perez Prado, Benny Moré, Ernesto Lecuona, reworked Herbie Hancock, Michael Jackson and Rolling Stones songs as well as Lewis’ own songs. Lewis’ Cuban Swing Express stems in part to the influence of his father, Ricardo Gonzalez Duquesne - director of the
renowned 1960s Orquesta de Música Moderna de Pinar del Rio.

Dance Band Night is both a concert, and a dance lesson, as the historic North Beach Bandshell is converted into a ballroom under the stars. This community event invites area residents and visitors to enjoy in a neighborly evening of music and dance. Each monthly edition of Dance Band Night features a live band that plays music with a specific social dance, i.e. swing, salsa, ballroom, etc. Before the band begins, professional dance instructors give the crowd a short lesson so everyone can learn or refresh their moves. The band then performs, giving the crowd the opportunity to put their skills on display.
Dance Band Night is produced by The Rhythm Foundation and receives support from the City of Miami Beach, Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs, The Miami Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Cuban Swing Express concert is funded in part with a grant from South Arts in partnership with the NEA and the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs and received support from Baldwin Piano.
