About the South Florida Jazz Hall of Fame…
In an effort to pay homage to, show appreciation for, and pay tribute to some of South Florida’s legendary and truly extraordinary Jazz personalities; both past & present, the South Florida Jazz Hall of Fame was established in January 2009.   The first induction ceremony took place June of that same year with Julien “Cannonball” Adderly, Charles “China” Valles, Jesse Jones, Jr., Othello Molineaux, Lenny Zeif, Alice Day, and the late Chief Sandrell Rivers being the first group of inductees.  Recognizing the accomplishments and contributions of these outstanding individuals was the brain child of famed international recording artist and world class jazz diva, Ms. Alice Day.  It was designed as a mere “thank you” to honor those who made and make it possible for the continuance of jazz, noting the impact their contributions have made in the Jazz world, on these South Florida Shores, and on the world stage.  The South Florida Jazz Hall of Fame has a very short history, but the future will take a lot longer…

“We are excited to celebrate these awesome masters of a truly American Classical art form, Jazz”, said Alice Day, International Recording Artist, Founder and Chairperson of the South Florida Jazz Hall of Fame.  “This year’s inductees are some of South Florida’s legends; local pioneers who have paved the way for present and future musicians to play and progress in the world of Jazz.  I am truly humbled by the awesome contributions my gifted colleagues have made, aiding in the preservation and authenticity of Jazz locally and for many of them, nationally and internationally.  We invite and encourage the community to come out and be a part of history as we salute these great individuals for their achievements and tireless work,” Day added.

For more information on the 2010 South Florida Jazz Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony & Jazz Concert, please call the Joseph Caleb Auditorium Box Office at

If you wish, and we really wish you wouldn’t, like to be removed from this list, please reply with
REMOVE in subject line.  It will make us very sad if you do, and perhaps your removal will be the
one the makes us decide this no longer worth doing at all, and all the information we provide will
go away forever and musicians will sit home alone at night and cry because they have no one to
play for because no one knows about their shows. Your call…..

South Florida JAZZ ends stellar season with Kurt Elling Performance June 11, 2011

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs #JazzClubs #BluesClubs

June 11, 2011 Season Finale Concert
South Florida JAZZ presents
the incomparable KURT ELLING,
the Grammy-awarded, Best Male Jazz Vocalist
according to all jazz polls.
South Florida JAZZ, South Florida’s premier modern jazz organization,  is excited to present vocalist KURT ELLING on Saturday June 11, 2011, 8:00 PM. This concert will take place at the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus,
"Since the mid-1990s, no singer in jazz has been as daring, dynamic or interesting as Kurt Elling. With his soaring vocal flights, his edgy lyrics and sense of being on a musical mission, he has come to embody the creative spirit in jazz."   - The Washington Post

Chicago native Kurt Elling is the most accomplished male jazz singer extant. In a career spanning 15 years, 42-year-old Elling has risen to international prominence as a jazz artist and singer. Each of his seven albums for Blue Note and the first two on Concord records were nominated for Grammy Awards. His 2009 CD, Dedicated to You: Kurt Elling Sings the Music of Coltrane and Hartman, the second on Concord Records, was recorded live at Lincoln Center and won the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Kurt’s latest recording, The Gate, was released in March 2011 and of course features pianist-arranger and producer Laurence Hobgood, who commands the helm of a quartet with guitarist John Mclean, bassist Harish Raghavan, and drummer Ulysses Owens. On The Gate, Mr. Elling lyrically caresses and melodically illuminates the lush and gorgeous tunes from the new American Songbook. It is likely to raise some eyebrows.

Kurt Elling has topped the DownBeat and JazzTimes Readers and Critics polls every year since 2000 and won the Jazz Journalists Association award six times for Best Male Vocalist.

Kurt’s rich baritone voice spans four octaves and he displays both astonishing technical facility and emotional depth. He has an awesome command of rhythm, texture, phrasing, and dynamics, often sounding more like a virtuoso jazz instrumentalist than a singer. His repertoire ranges from his own compositions to modern interpretations of standards, both of which can be the springboard for free form improvisation, scatting, spoken words, poetry, and rants. As composer and lyricist, Kurt Elling has written scores of his own compositions and has mastered “vocalese,” the art of setting lyrics to the songs and improvised solos of many jazz masters. And no one can match his scatting for speed, dexterity and invention.
In addition to his extraordinary work as an artist, Kurt Elling served as a national trustee for the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) beginning in 1999. In 2003, he was elected Vice Chair of that 17,000-member service organization and served two successful terms. While Vice Chairman, Elling was effective in opening up new channels of communication within the Academy. He helped create and hosted the first two annual Recording Academy Salutes to Jazz. He oversaw the creation of the Academy's Lifetime Achievement and Trustees Awards Review Committee, and continues as its chairman.

A true Renaissance man, Kurt Elling remains among the most interesting figures in the world of modern music and poetry, both at a musical and intellectual level.

What the critics are saying:
"[possibly] the greatest jazz singer of all time."
- Jazz Review (UK)

"Kurt Elling is arguably the most interesting and innovative jazz singer to come along in years..."
- Artie Shaw

"Elling is a cool breeze in the desert of male jazz singers. Elling sings, scats, does vocalese, tells stories and reads poetry in a baritone voice that bounces from sweet to tangy."
- Philadelphia Daily News

$49.95 per person or $89.95 per couple
Tickets at donjuceam.com

Celebrating the 95th Birthday year of Francis Albert Sinatra,
Don Juceam aka "Tampa Bay's Frank Sinatra" will be producing
his public show FRANKLY SINATRA & FRIENDS, a dinner,
music and dancing gala on Friday July 29, 2011 at
T Pepin's Hospitality Centre
4121 North 50th St.
in Tampa.
Fans of Ole’ Blue Eyes will want to give this event their strong
consideration for attendance as songs will be performed in their
original style by Don and his 19pc Orchestra, not something
you see every day.  Guests will also be treated to an
Italian Dinner Sinatra Style along with access to a Cash Bar.
Doors will open at 7pm and the show begins at 8pm.

Tickets can be purchased on line at www.donjuceam.com for
$49.95 per person or $89.95 per couple.  Tables of 8 can
be reserved at no extra charge by calling 813-600-3134.
Finally a free CD of Don’s recordings of Rat Pack favorites
is also included in the ticket price (but don’t tell anyone yet,
it’s going to be a surprise!)

Reflecting on the upcoming show Don notes that," the music and arrangements of Mr. Sinatra made him the most popular entertainer of the 20th century. His interpretations of these songs influenced 3 generations of listeners to see their life experiences within the context of those lyrics. The sheer volume of his work is simply amazing- over 1500 songs. We can only scratch the surface of this vast repertoire in one evening so we’ll be doing some of the ‘favorite favorites’ along with some lesser known but equally excellent tunes. With a vast music library to choose from we could do a new show each week throughout the year.  We’ll also play some songs made famous by Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Bobby Darin, Nat King Cole, Tony Bennett,  and Harrick Connick Jr.  Other styles of recorded music will be played after the performance for the late night crowd and ballroom dancers. “

“Whether you’re a dancer, listener, jazz fan or were fortunate enough to attend a Sinatra show in the past everyone will hear something they know and like. Performing at the Pepin Centre is a particular treat as it is the best venue in town for this type of event.  The atmosphere is conducive to the old school night club environs of the past with all the modern conveniences and  a beautiful stage and first class sound and lighting systems. Puff n Stuff Catering, the exclusive caterer at Pepin is designing the Sinatra Style Italian Dinner and it will be incredible as usual.”

“The Orchestra is composed of musicians who are top shelf performers in their own rite. They are all familiar with the “Sinatra Book” and enjoy bringing this music to life. I’m not bashful about promoting this style of music to the public because it’s always well received.  We see the interest reflected in the continuing phone calls for wedding receptions, corporate events, private parties and the like. It keeps us employed and keeps our chops at a high level of ability. This is not easy music to perform correctly- it’s in complex keys with wide ranging dynamics and tempo changes- all part of the successful delivery of the song.”

Considering the long term performance possibilities, Don says, “New York is the Big Apple, Chicago’s the Windy City, New Orleans’ the Big Easy, let’s make Tampa the City of Sinatra. It’s a blessing to be able to do what you love and make a modest living at it to boot. We hope for strong support for this show so that we can produce more of them more frequently.  As the man said, “Doo Bee Doo Bee Doo, baby””

Jazz greats wow crowd, raise funds for beloved Miami Florida community gem - Historic Hampton House

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs #JazzClubs #BluesClubs

From South Florida Times
Written by RENEE MICHELLE HARRIS

"If you closed your eyes last Saturday and imagined that the year was 1960, the venue could very well have been the Hampton House.

The once fabulous haven located in the Brownsville section of Miami featured the likes of Cab Calloway, Sammy Davis Jr. and even Martin Luther King, who is said to have perfected his famous I Have a Dream speech there before delivering it in the nation’s capitol."
