South Motors Jazz Series at Pinecrest Gardens Season Finale w/ Marcus Roberts Trio & The NWSA Jazz Band April 22, 2017

Marcus Roberts &
The New World School
of the Arts Jazz Band

Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 8:00 p.m.
A night of Romance, Swing, and the Blues with the
& The New World School of the Arts Jazz Band

“The Genius of Modern Piano.” - Wynton Marsalis
“His combination of talent, ambition, discipline, stylistic openness and resourcefulness suggest that he is a remarkable musician—perhaps even a phenomenon…” - Michael West, Jazz Times

Marcus Roberts lost his sight when he was just 5 years old. But that didn’t stop him from becoming one of the top pianists of his generation. A prodigious talent, Roberts landed his first recording contract at age 15. At age 21 he began touring with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Band. After six years with Marsalis, he left to tour to record with his own band. Roberts’ critically-acclaimed legacy of recorded music reflects his tremendous versatility as an artist; his recordings include solo piano, duets, and trio arrangements of jazz standards as well as original suites of music. In 2014, Marcus Roberts was honored to have his life and work featured on a segment of the celebrated CBS News television show 60 Minutes. The show, entitled “The Virtuoso”, traced Roberts’ life to date from his early roots in Jacksonville and at the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind to his remarkable career as a modern jazz musician.

Saturday, April 1, 2017 ~ 8:00-12pm ~ $15
Nancy Kelly
w/ Terry Myers

Nancy’s live performances are legendary. She has earned many awards and enlisted fans from around the globe. In a market place where wispy voices and shallow emotions abound, Ms. Kelly is a breath of fresh air…or should we say, smoky air; she takes us back to the time when jazz – and that includes vocal jazz -- was an authentic expression of real emotion.

Terry’s, dynamic career has enabled him to appear with such talented players as Tommy Dorsey Orchestra (Buddy Morrow), Bob Haggert, Milt Hinton, Butch Miles, Warren Vache', Kenny Davern, Marty Grosz, Major Holly, Mousey Alexander, Flip Phillips, Walt Lavinsky, Bill Allred, John Allred, Wild Bill Davison, Chubby Jackson, Duffy Jackson, Rosemary Clooney, Eddie Higgins, Bobby Rosengarten, Larry Elgart, Vince Giordano, and a host of others.

Leah Johnson began her musical studies in Central Florida on piano at age 6 and cello at age 10. She earned her BM in cello performance from the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music, studying with Linc Smelser. Leah earned her MM in cello performance from DePaul University under the instruction of Stephen Balderston (former Assistant Principal of the Chicago Symphony) and played as an associate member with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago under the baton of Esa-Pekka Salonen. At DePaul she also performed with the 20+ Ensemble, dedicated to contemporary repertoire stretching the limits of instrumental technique, in its inaugural season. Leah has further studied at the prestigious Miami Music Festival on full scholarship, the Hot Springs Music Festival twice, and the Credo Chamber Music Festival.
