THE VOICE OF OUR TIME

TICKETS

An artist whose music is at once timeless yet utterly of its time, Gregory Porter solidifies his standing as his generation’s most soulful jazz singer-songwriter with Take Me to the Alley, winner of the 2017 GRAMMY Award for Jazz Vocal Album of the Year and the much-anticipated follow-up to his sensational 2013 Blue Note debut Liquid Spirit. Porter has time and again demonstrated an innate ability to transcend genre and connect with audiences from all walks of life, and his new music reflects the singer’s continued and mindful growth as an artist and as a person amidst the constant touring demands that have resulted from tremendous international success.

Liquid Spirit followed the critically acclaimed and GRAMMY-nominated albums Water (2010) and Be Good (2012) and quickly grew into a global phenomenon, selling one million albums worldwide and becoming the most streamed jazz album of all time with over 20 million streams. The album has sold Platinum in the U.K. and Germany, and Gold in France, The Netherlands, and Austria. In the U.S., Porter made his first-ever national TV appearances on “The Tonight Show” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live” while both ESQUIRE and NPR Music declared him “America’s next great jazz singer.”

Little Jake & The Soul Searchers In Jacksonville FL on February 24, 2018

So, So, Soulfully Soulful!

“A great showman with a soulful
voice and superb stage act.”
– The Vinyl Word, UK

Saturday, February 24, 2018 ~ 8-10pm
3105 Beach Blvd.JacksonvilleFL 32207
(904)398-4326

Saturday, March 17, 2018 ~ 7-9pm
Bike Florida 2018
Hawk's Park
1108 S Ridgewood Ave
Edgewater, FL 32132

Little Jake Mitchell is an authentic blues child prodigy and R&B singer who works as hard today as he did in his appearances at the Apollo Theater; as hard as he did on tour as "Mr. Excitement" with R&B immortals James Brown, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, and Bobby Blue Bland, or at the Pensacola Blues Festival, when B. B. King encouraged him to stay in show business.

Little Jake & The Soul Searchers—that's what you get when you combine Jake with The Silver-Sonic Horns and a powerful rhythm section. The band recalls authentic R&B stagecraft in support of a classic repertoire of soulful songs. Depending on the venue, Jake and the band treat audiences to sights and sounds seldom seen or heard since the golden age of R&B: opening singers, Tran “The Piano Man” Whitley and drummer, Hal "Halag8r" Saylor; a dynamic, audience-walking lead singer; a strolling horn section; a full-time emcee/announcer, Kenny "The Conductor" Eunice; and one of the funkiest rhythm sections around. The band's roots are deep, featuring sidemen who worked with Ike and Tina Turner, Billy Joe Royal, Ernie K Doe, Hues Corporation, and other R&B and rock pioneers.

The Silver-Sonic Horns, originally organized as The Blacklash Horns by Charlie Blade, trace their heritage back to 1969 when initially formed as the horn section for one of Florida's R&B pioneer band, Weston Prim & Blacklash: Blade on saxes, and long-time collaborator Brian 'T-Bone' Stevens on trombone. They are joined by Doug 'Skywalker' Meyers on trumpet. Classic R&B section-horn energy, funky improvisation by the whole horn section, a great appearance, and a topnotch sound system make The Silver-Sonic Horns an integral part of the Jake Mitchell experience.

The rhythm section features keyboardist and vocalist, Tran Whitley, holding forth on the real deal—a vintage Hammond B3 organ that anchors the band. Tran is joined by seasoned guitarist / backup vocalist, Charles Henry, who can play it funky, and does. On Fender bass, with years of experience beginning with Billy Joe Royal's road band, Allen McCollum keeps the bass line bumping and jumping. Providing energetic pulse and punctuation, and featured as an opening vocalist in every show: Hal Saylor on drums.

Little Jake Mitchell is one of Florida's great native-son ambassadors in rhythm and blues music. Little Jake & The Soul Searchers deliver authentic style and classic repertoire at every performance.

Tampa Jazz Club Presents American Pianist John Beasley February 26, 2018 at USF Concert Hall

JOHN BEASLEY’s
MONK’estra
Celebrating the Thelonious Monk Centennial

The Tampa Jazz Club presents JOHN BEASLEY, the pianist/ composer/ arranger whose MONK’estra project has received four Grammy nominations, will bring his dazzling new interpretations of Thelonious Monk’s music to USF’s Monday Night Jazz on February 26. To honor the Monk Centennial Year, Beasley will conduct the USF JAZZ ENSEMBLE in the USF Concert Hall, beginning at 7:30m. Monday Night Jazz, a monthly concert series for more than 20 years, is presented in conjunction with the USF School of Music, WUSF's All Night Jazz.

A jazz veteran who was the pianist for both Miles Davis and Freddie Hubbard in his early years, John Beasley has been Music Director for world tours by Steely Dan, Queen Latifah, and others. Based in Hollywood, he has extensive experience working on major film soundtracks, and as arranger for television, from ‘American Idol’ to ‘The Kennedy Center Honors.’  Beasley has also directed the International Jazz Day global concerts presented by UNESCO since their inception, from venues in Paris, Istanbul, Osaka, Havana, and The White House.

As the world paid tribute in the past year to the centennial of the birth of Thelonious Monk, Beasley’s visionary arrangements of Monk’s music became a sensation in the jazz world. The two MONK’estra albums shine a new light on Monk’s singular sound, with contemporary harmonies, unstoppable grooves, and a real sense of fun.

The 18-piece USF JAZZ ENSEMBLE gave listeners an unforgettable treat at November’s Monday Night Jazz, playing under the direction of composer John Clayton. Don’t miss their collaboration with JOHN BEASLEY and his bold explorations of Monk – described by the International Review of Music as ‘some of the most mesmerizing big band music of recent memory.’
